Learning to be a portable church
Part of my learning in this church plant journey includes learning how to be part of a portable church. Being portable involves set up and tear down for weekly services. Tomorrow I’m heading to The Chapel at Elmwood which holds its service in the Elmwood Regal Cinemas in Buffalo. I visited last fall and got an overall tour but can’t wait to join right in! I’ll be focusing on all the children’s and student’s areas and Matt will be going to focus on the set up/tear down of all the tech stuff.
Over the past 7 months I’ve had the opportunity to see how a few other churches do this process in different facilities.
- Mountain Lake Church, Cumming, GA–West Forsyth campus
- located in W. Forsyth High School
- 9 miles from the N. Forsyth campus of Mountain Lake (permanent building)
- services–2 at W. Forsyth and 4 at N. Forsyth for total of 6 services
- Oak Leaf Church, Cartersville, GA
- located in Woodland High School
- services–2 Sunday morning
- Elevation Church, Charlotte NC
- located in 2 high schools–Providence High School and Butler High School
- 2 high schools located 5 miles apart
- services–4 at Providence and 2 at Butler for total of 6 services on Sundays
I love being a part of all of this!!! I can’t wait to do this for Walls Down!!

Many, many years ago I was a part of a such a church. I was impressed by how much work it took EVERY week to get make the day run smoothly. In many ways I think it is a healthy thing for a church.
I was part of such a church for awhile too. When we first came to church, we attended in an “all purpose building.” Several years later, a gym was built and we moved in there. Finally the sanctuary was built. Now we have two buildings and it is so nice. However, I do miss the commraderie of putting things up and taking them down.
