Proud Mom moment

Honesty and integrity are a couple of the most important values I have tried to teach my kids. My friend Paul tells his story about losing his wallet this past week and how honesty and integrity (and prayer!) brought it back to him (check it out here). Perfect story to share with my guys…little did I know that our own story was unfolding and it would lead to a very “proud Mom” moment!

Back in December, my youngest son was walking after school to the library when he looked down and found an ipod sitting in the snow near the sidewalk. He took it back to his school and turned it in to the principal. He was told that they would notify both the school and library offices and it was hoped that the owner would claim it. If by chance, no one claimed it, after a length of time, the principal would give it to my son. Dan came home and told me what he had done and I was very proud of his honesty at the time.

This past week I got a phone call from the principal describing exactly what my son had told me months ago and told me that no one had claimed it. It would be given to Dan the next day. Not only could I reinforce the story about Paul’s wallet, but now Dan was rewarded for being on the other end of being honest! The great thing was that he had been asking and asking for a new player for a few weeks. It was exactly what he had been wanting. He was able to charge it at a friend’s house and he listened to some songs that were already on it. He was so thrilled and excited to have his own ipod! But the story doesn’t end there.

Today he turned it on to listen, pushed one of the setting buttons and a first name was listed (Sean). By itself that would mean nothing, but then he started thinking about the songs he had heard. Dan DJ’s for hockey games and the songs were the ones he uses for warm-ups for one of the local high school hockey teams. We know Sean, who plays for the team, and my son ran to me and announced he had figured who the owner was. We called Sean, and sure enough it was his! He was shocked!

Not only had Dan originally turned in the ipod when he found it, but now was honest to call and return it when he discovered the owner (he was the only one who saw the name and heard the songs and he made the right choice totally on his own). I am just so incredibly proud of him!! It’s times like these that make being Mom completely worth it all!

  1. Way to go Dan!!!
Way to go Rindy!! He learned this by your example of honesty and integrity. This kind of integrity is “caught”, not just “taught.”

  2. way to go Mom. You did a great job instilling these values in him. Take a moment to pat yourself on the back too!

  5. That is absolutely awesome! Wow. Not many kids would do that. You are obviously doing a GREAT job

  6. So you went out and bought him the ipod he’s been wanting. . .right? (just thought you needed a boys perspective)

  7. It’s stories like this that help restore my faith that there are still parents and children doing “the right thing”.

  9. That is something to be proud of! Way to go mom oh and Dan too! :)

  10. There’s not much to add to everyone else’s comments! Dan did a really great thing and he should be proud of himself and Rindy you’ve taught him well, so you SHOULD be proud!! What a witness to Sean too. I’m sure it blew him away that Dan would do something like that. How many other kids these days would’ve done the same thing??? Probably not many! I would hope mine would follow Dan’s example and he’s provided me with a great “teaching moment” with my kids! Thanks Dan and thanks for sharing Rindy!!

I vote for a new iPod for Dan too, if you’re taking a poll!!

  11. Great work both of you!!!
