Faith, hope, and a black belt

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.

They will soar high on wings like eagles.

They will run and not grow weary.

They will walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Have you ever been to the point of complete exhaustion? Have you ever worked so hard and struggled for so long that you absolutely cannot go on? Ever thought you saw the finish line, but when you got there you realized you had another mile to go? You’ve exerted every ounce of energy, every muscle aches, and fatigue washes over you like a 40 foot wave. You have nothing left to give and you have no idea how much longer you must go on. The prize is what you desire and you are willing to sacrifice all. You know it’s there somewhere, if you can only make it through. You would get it, if you only could endure.

Testing for my taekwondo black belt was not only a test of skill, but even more it was a test of endurance and what was inside us. The three day test was meant to shatter the limits both mentally and physically. The instructors promised they would push us to the brink of total collapse, and they did. The first day was a written exam, examining the knowledge that we had spent years acquiring. Only after passing that could we move on to the real test. The second day we performed the basics, over and over, with all the energy, speed, and strength that we could gather. If the evaluators believed that just one student did not give their best, we all repeated it again. After 3 1/2 hours on a Friday night, we were allowed to go…until the next morning. The “underbelts” were finished, the black belt candidates were just getting started.

Saturday morning came and it all began again. After a “warm-up” of review techniques tested the night before, we moved on to advanced techniques. Again, if the effort by one wasn’t 100%, all would repeat until the evaluators were satisfied. We were pushed to our limits, and what was left was that which was now a part of us. We knew though that much of the testing remained. After performing techniques and executing patterns, wiping up sweat and digging deep down for more energy, we were paired for testing of self-defense skills. The instructors had always warned us that if we could not defend ourselves, we would not get a black belt. There were no “freebies” here. It consisted of being attacked and reacting, no time to think or plan, and hoping that you didn’t freeze. When that was done, it was time for sparring. Three different opponents, no breaks between each, and no holding back. Complete exhaustion had set in long ago. Yet, something kept us going. Knowing what was at the end gave us strength to push on. The final task was breaking boards. With resources spent, somehow we mustered the ability to perform feats that were beyond making any sense. We did it. For 4 hours on that third day, we had endured and we had made it. We had to have believed it could be done because in the midst of it, there was nothing left to give.

Sometimes life seems like that black belt testing. We do what we must, over and over. We exert every ounce of energy and then are asked to give more. We rely on others but when they don’t give their all, we have to do it all over again. We are left on our own, to rely only on ourselves. We are pushed to the brink. Then when we think that we have given all we can, life begins to beat up on us. Marriages fall apart, friends walk away, families turn their backs, jobs are lost, illness or death jumps in and hope in anything seems so far away. That’s the time we dig deep inside, to draw in any bit of energy that’s tucked away somewhere in reserve. We are pushed beyond our limits, the energy is spent and what’s left is what is a part of us.

I think that faith is holding on when we feel that no hope remains in this life. There’s no hope left that dreams will come true or that things will work the way we desire. Faith is what’s left inside when we have nothing left to give. Faith is what exists in believing that God is who He is, even though we don’t understand at all. We have to believe in the prize, because in the midst of the struggle, we find the ability to endure beyond anything that makes sense. Sometimes trusting is the only way to get the strength to make it through.

  1. dont give up visualizing the prize and doing what is right. you encouraged me with gal 6:9 for what, a year? and then last sunday you sent it again, realizing that it was finally time for me to reap the blessings of my faith and determination. so it may take you a bit longer. i got lucky. but you were there for me in the bad times and are now rejoicing for me in the great times. and i am here for you during the struggle while also looking forward to seeing you get your blessings. prob the longer you wait and the more you hang in there the better the prize will seem. remember the cactus…i may be a pain in the butt i will not go away either. looking forward to celebrating with you.
“Don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.” Gal 6:9
remember in order to reap that we must first sew.

  2. I like writing Bible studies in the summers (I’m a teacher and I’m off) and I did one on the love chapter of 1 Corinthians a while back.

The biggest thing that I learned was that when someone’s given us reason to not believe in them…we can at least hope that things will turn around. That realization has gotten me through a lot.

I may not believe that marriage is great…but I sure do hope that it is. I may not believe that there’s a man out there for me…but I sure do hope that there is.

    I believe in hope.

  3. This verse is one of my favorite ones in the Bible! I’ve come to rely on it many times when I feel hopeless or weary. Good one!!

I agree with your definition of faith and believe that sometimes we have to be at our worst in order to bring it out. Usually when things are going smoothly and everything is fine we tend to forget about faith (or take it for granted), but it’s when we’re at the bottom that we grab hold of it and use it to help lift us up again. It’ when we can’t rely on ourselves that we have to rely on Faith to get us through, because like you said we’re spent!!

Thanks for this reminder and for another great blog!

  4. Well said, especially your last paragraph. Thank you.

  5. Great post Rindy. Beautifully written. As Steve said, your last paragraph was right now. Keep reaching and God will continue to provide the “Cloud by day”.

  6. Great story connecting Scripture to personal life. As a pastor friend of mine says - “That’ll preach.”

  7. Rindy,

You’re a great writer with the ability to make complex subjects (e.g. faith) graspable through your use of story!

Thanks for putting this one in our hands!

  8. Way to go! Nice parallel.

(never left the white belt in tae kwon do….)

  9. man I admire you…I only made it to orange. I was training for a competition and they put me with a black belt to do kicks and blocks….he broke my arm when I blocked his hip. I haven’t been back since…..

  10. correction on last sentence above…
he broke my arm when I blocked his kick….
I’m tired and my brain isn’t working right now…LOL

  11. Yeah, I know the feeling. Being a theatrical director I get to experience it on a regular basis during my 100+ hour tech week for just about every major production. Thank you for the encouragement I will be coming back to this one in a few weeks as the time grows closer.

  12. three words

    thanks for that!

  13. I’m with pistolpete on this one, “that’ll preach”. Keep on keepin’ on! It’s always to soon to quit!

    Amen!
Trusting and holding on tight to Jesus is the only way to make it through. By His grace we stand when we have no strength left, we endure, and by His grace we can even have joy in the struggle.
    He is so very faithful!

Bless you Rindy for being faithful, I know that Jesus loves you!

  15. Wow. I have never had endurance or drive like that. I’ve seen glimpses of it in the past. For the things that are difficult for me, I have always been able to find an easier way out or a good enough excuse. I’m on the road to learning this “endurance for the final prize” way of life. And its kind of cool. There are some things that come so easily to me and I’ve been content to stick with those. But the really big goals that take digging deep…I’ve only reached a couple. I’m hoping some of the disciplines we’re going through now will help break this stumbling block for me. Thanks for the story. Its a great visual to help me remember!

  16. Fitly-spoken words, Rindy!

The first thoughts that came to my mind as I read were “Faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things NOT SEEN” (Hebrews 11.1) and “without it, it’s impossible to please God” (11.6) Isn’t it wonderful that He gives us even this? The phrase “—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” in Ephesians 2.9 is talking about the word in front of it. Faith.

    Great thoughts!
    Phil—
